Recommitting Ourselves to the America We Still Believe In

WASHINGTON – Today, we mourn the loss of precious life and reflect on the devastation that hit our nation over the weekend. Terrible things happen when fear and hate are normalized. The American Immigration Council stands with the resilient and welcoming communities of El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

While we feel pain and anguish today, we will turn this grief into recommitment to our belief that America always has been and always will be a nation of immigrants and that our diversity is our strength.

We recommit to challenge the mindsets and rhetoric that give life to unjust laws and policies that empower extremists to destroy lives and devastate communities.

We recommit to the America we believe still exists. Where neighbors care for their families and communities, and where good intentions are assumed—regardless of where a person is born, the color of their skin, or their religious beliefs.

We recommit to a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection, as well as those who come here to make America better for everyone.
