American Heritage Awards!
A HUGE thanks to our Title Co-Sponsors:
Carlos Arredondo - As bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, Carlos, a Red Cross volunteer, ran to help Jeff Bauman, a spectator who suffered life threatening injuries. The photo of Carlos, adorned with a cowboy hat, running alongside Jeff's wheelchair as he was rushed to safety was one of the most striking and memorable images from the marathon bombing. Carlos is also a member of Veterans for Peace and works on suicide prevention efforts with both Samaritans and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Rais Bhuiyan - Weeks after the tragic events of 9/11, Rais was the victim of a killing spree by white supremacist Mark Stroman. Rais survived, but instead of responding to Stroman’s actions with hate and anger, he mounted an aggressive campaign to convince Texas authorities to reduce his assailant’s sentence from death to life in prison. Though Stroman was executed, Rais continues his World Without Hate campaign to promote healing, compassion, and forgiveness. Author Anand Giridharadas released a new book based on Bhuiyan’s remarkable story, The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas .
Mary Mazzio - Mary has directed several ground-breaking and thought-provoking documentary films. Her most recent documentary, Underwater Dreams , tells the true story of a group of undocumented high school science students and their two teachers entering in an against-the-odds robot competition sponsored by NASA and the Office of Naval Research. Armed with little more than some PVC pipe and duct tape, the group from Carl Hayden Community High School traveled to the competition where it was just the beginning of their journey. Mazzio brings to light this inspirational story of a rag-tag high school robotics team who faced the odds—and MIT—and made it farther than any of them ever imagined.
