America’s colleges and universities benefit greatly from immigration. Foreign-born students add diverse perspectives to the classroom, and they are disproportionately likely to pursue innovation-rich fields like science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Yet US immigration laws pose major challenges for our colleges and universities. Though our education system attracts the brightest minds from around the world, our laws make it difficult for those students to stay after graduation and apply their education here in the U.S.
To demonstrate their support for policies to fix our broken immigration system, on April 19th, college and universities from across the country are taking part in the Immigration Reform Day of Action. More than 75 schools are participating in some fashion, ranging from addresses from university presidents or chancellors to screenings of the new film “The Dream is Now” to digital campaigns and phone-banking to rally support for reform. With the support of the Partnership for a New American Economy and the National Immigration Forum, these institutions are leading the charge for reforms that will make America more competitive and more innovative for future generations.
