American executives are beginning to make more noise about the U.S.’s bizarrely uncompetitive policy on immigration. They’re hoping to break the logjam of political paralysis on the issue, one on which your average Democrat and Republican can agree: We’re letting too much immigrant talent leak out of the country. We educate them and then let them innovate elsewhere.
When it comes to immigration, the country is stuck in the past, as if 9/11 happened a year ago, not almost 11 years ago. Given that job creation is issue No. 1 with voters, it’s remarkable the nation is so inhospitable to highly skilled immigrants who so often harness innovation and create great companies.
