Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky already form more of an international region than some here might know, results of a new study of high-skilled foreign workers employed in major U.S. cities show.
And, according to the Brookings Institution report, “The Search for Skills,” the region is serious about developing a high-skilled domestic workforce in technology and science to reduce the dependence on overseas talent.
Researchers in Brookings’ Metropolitan Policy Program studied the geography of employer requests for H-1B visas. The visas are government permits, created by the Immigration Act of 1990, that allow employers to hire foreigners to work in specialty occupations on a temporary basis – primarily science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
