In the wake of the last election, millions of decent immigrants remain hostages to partisanship. Last week, Republicans gained majorities in the U.S. House and Senate and at least three governorships, including
Illinois. President Barack Obama reiterated his vow of an executive order on immigration reform before the end of the year. Mitch McConnell, the likely Senate majority leader, said that would be waving a red flag in front of an angry bull. House Speaker John Boehner called it “poisoning the well” for legislative action.
As one who supported the new majority, I believe Republicans, regardless of what the president does, must not waste their tremendous victory. We must show Latino and Asian voters that the Republican Party stands for all Americans. I urge Republican leaders and the president to get together on as much of this as they can to advance legislation before the president acts through an executive order.
