After decades when states such as California, Florida, and New York attracted the majority of immigrants to the country, Arizona—which shares a 372-mile border with Mexico—has recently emerged as a major destination for New Americans. In 1990, 7.6 percent of Arizona residents were foreign-born. By 2010, that figure had risen to 13.4 percent.
