Although California, New York, and Texas often come to mind when people think of the states with the largest numbers of immigrants, Massachusetts has long had a powerful draw on newcomers to America. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Massachusetts was one of seven states that as a group attracted between 60 to 75 percent of all the immigrants arriving in the United States each year. In more recent years, the state has continued to welcome many new foreign-born residents. Between 2010 and 2014, the number of immigrants in Massachusetts grew by 8.1 percent. That jump was greater than the increase in the foreign-born population in the United States as a whole during that period.
