How Immigrants Subsidize Medicare’s Trust Fund for All U.S. Seniors [REPORT]

New research from New American Economy highlights U.S. immigrants’ outsized contributions to Medicare, illustrating that immigrants—including undocumented immigrants—use relatively little health care.
Key findings from the report include:
- Between 2012 and 2018, immigrants contributed an average of $165.52 more per capita annually to the Medicare Trust Fund than was spent on their behalf. Meanwhile, U.S.-born people cost the Trust Fund an average of $51.46 per capita.
- In some states, immigrants contributed even more on average. In Georgia, for example, immigrants contributed $681 more per capita each year than was spent on their behalf. Immigrants in Virginia contributed even more, $691 per capita each year.
