Statement for the Senate Judiciary Committee on “Building America’s Trust Through Border Security: Progress on the Southern Border”

The American Immigration Council submitted a written statement for the Senate Judiciary Committee for a May 23, 2017 hearing on “Building America’s Trust Through Border Security: Progress on the Southern Border.” The statement shares our analysis of infrastructure and personnel investments already made by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as well as our reporting on improvements needed at its border enforcement agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to ensure integrity of operations along the Southern Border. The statement describes DHS’ current practcies and draws to attention the lack of transparent, stable, and consistent metrics for evaluating border enforcement. Finally, the statement urges Congress to take a comprehensive look at border security and examine the totality of needs at the Southern border.
