Across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been conducting community-level raids in order to meet a White House directive of deporting approximately 3,000 people per day.
In Los Angeles, which is home to the second-largest immigrant population among U.S. metropolitan areas, countless families and communities have been impacted. Approximately one in four U.S. citizens in the city lives with at least one immigrant parent.
As communities respond to the chaos and fear that resulted from these raids, research from the Council underscores the significant contributions immigrants make to the economic and social fabric of major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles.
Research like this underscores the need for policies that protect immigrant families and create pathways to citizenship — instead of ramping up indiscriminate detention and deportation operations.
Spending Bill Threatens Immigrant Communities
Right now, the Senate is considering a dangerous reconciliation spending bill that would expand immigration enforcement and devastate our communities. All while slashing funding from healthcare, education, workforce, and food assistance programs for millions of Americans.
In the past few months, ICE has targeted students, day laborers and breast-feeding mothers, for arrests in their own communities.
ICE has violated people’s due process rights by labeling them criminals without evidence.
The Trump administration has ignored court orders in at least three immigration-related lawsuits.
More funding for indiscriminate immigration enforcement under this administration will only tear thousands of families apart and erode core American values while gumming up the legal immigration system and bringing lasting harm to our communities and local economies.
We need policies that protect families, uphold due process, and support—not target—our communities. Urge your Senator to oppose the reconciliation bill.
