DHS Issues Tropical Storm Karen Guidance The American Immigration Council does not endorse or oppose candidates for elected office. We aim to provide analysis regarding the implications of the election on the U.S. immigration system.

immigrationnewsflash1As they have done during previous weather-related emergencies, the Department of Homeland Security issued guidance directing that immigration enforcement activities be suspended.

The directive notes:

“…to the extent that Karen impacts law enforcement operations and/or the storm triggers the need for an officially ordered evacuation or an emergency government response, there will be no immigration enforcement initiatives associated with evacuations or sheltering related to Karen, including the use of checkpoints for immigration purposes in impacted areas during an evacuation.”

It additionally notes, that in the event that detainees would be transferred to new facilities for their safety, that their attorney must be notified and the Online Detainer Locator updated.
