Immigrants started 28 percent of all new businesses in the U.S. in 2011, Washington Bureau Chief Kent Hoover reports, pointing to a report by the Partnership for a New America Economy.
The report, which is based on three sets of data from the U.S. Census Bureau, found that the business startup rate among immigrants has jumped 50 percent since 1996. The startup rate for native-born Americans, meanwhile, declined by 10 percent during the same period.
In North Carolina, immigrants make up 3.4 percent of new business owners, according to the report.
