Three prominent Iowa Republicans said Wednesday they have joined a national coalition of conservatives and business leaders who are urging Congress to approve immigration reform.
They include John Stineman, a Republican strategist who is also executive director of the Iowa Chamber Alliance; former state Sen. Jeff Angelo, who now lives in Ames; and Jon Troen, president of Mittera Group, a Des Moines-based media company with about 500 Iowa employees.
The three leaders spoke at an Iowa Statehouse news conference sponsored by the “Partnership for a New American Economy,” which hosted similar pro-immigration reform events Wednesday in more than 20 states.
“Immigration reform is needed now and it requires a legislative solution” rather than executive action being considered by President Barack Obama, Stineman said. He said Republican election victories on Nov. 4 that assure GOP control of the U.S. House and Senate provide an opportunity to fix the immigration system and guarantee it reflects conservative principles.
