Immigration has been in the spotlight since President Donald Trump took office, and a new study helps highlight the role immigrants have in Tennessee’s economy.
According to a report from the bipartisan New American Economy, Tennessee is home to more than 322,000 immigrants, who have nearly $6 billion in annual spending power, The Tennessean reports.
“Immigrants fill workforce gaps in the economy that are important to maintaining our ongoing prosperity,” Ralph Schulz, CEO of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a news conference Tuesday highlighting the study, according to The Tennessean.
According to the study, immigrants make up 5 percent of the state’s population and 6 percent of its workforce. Nashville is home to more than 139,000 immigrants, representing 7.8 percent of the city’s population.
