Anyone who was hoping that President Trump would forget about one of his top campaign issues — illegal immigration — once he took office was doomed to disappointment.
Opponents of Trump’s stepped-up immigration enforcement program pointed to research showing crime rates among immigrant populations are lower than among native-born Americans. They warned of the economic and social repercussions of wholesale deportation. To no avail: After making deportation of illegal immigrants a centerpiece of his campaign platform, Trump couldn’t back down even if he wanted to.
Wednesday, the Trump administration unveiled a deportation plan widely seen as targeting people from Mexico and Central America.
There is little disagreement that illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes should be deported; the United States was already doing this on a large scale under the Obama administration. But Trump has broadened the scope of deportation to include people whose sole offense is entering the country illegally — a civil offense, not a crime.
