Finding and keeping highly skilled workers is a subject that’s more like a double-edged sword to many people. In places like Silicon Valley, the need for highly skilled workers is met by hiring foreign workers, using the government issued H-1B visa to fill these positions.

The reason for this is simple, there are no qualified American workers to fill these positions. This finding is based on a study published Wednesday by the non-partisan Brookings Institute.

An examination was done by city on the demand for the H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers. Neil Ruiz, with Brookings says he found the need far out paces the supply by a large margin. He found that with the U.S. putting caps on the number of these visas every year, companies are prevented from filling job slots.
