Editorial: Immigration reform needed

Yes, Wisconsin needs immigrants — and the nation needs immigration reform. Current policies and proposals to reduce immigration or deport undocumented workers fly in the face of what the nation needs to maintain a healthy economy.

That’s especially true in places like rural Wisconsin, as a coalition of Wisconsin business and civic leaders noted Wednesday when they launched a campaign for immigration policy reform. Government leaders need to pay attention to the campaign and seriously consider proposals for significant change.

It’s a matter of demographics. There’s a declining population available for work in rural areas as young people look for opportunities elsewhere and as the general population ages and retires.
