The American Immigration Council (the Council) works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring.
The Council’s State and Local Initiatives team works with a network of more than 100 local communities and more than 35 states to advocate for and support immigrant integration initiatives and policies.
Your Role. . .
Senior Policy Manager will work with the Director of State and Local Initiatives to execute the overarching strategy for the team’s portfolio. The incumbent in the role will support the director in stakeholder management, research, communications, fundraising, and project management. This role will be responsible for working on multiple projects, including managing state and local-level policy and advocacy efforts, business community engagement, and coalition-building with public, private, and civic partners.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, self-starter, strong communicator (including public speaking), effective multi-tasker, proactive, and a skilled writer. They have a background in immigration policy at the state and local level and are comfortable working in a fast-paced policy environment with stakeholders that range from senior state legislators to grassroots leaders.
The Senior Policy Manager’s portfolio will cover a range of projects, including ensuring collaboration and coordination across several departmental flagship programs: the Global Talent Chamber Network, which brings together more than 60 chambers of commerce who see immigrant integration as an economic growth strategy, our three statewide business coalitions, unifying the business voice around immigration reform in Texas, Colorado, and Ohio, and our state legislative advocacy.
Essential Job Functions. . .
- Work with the Director of State and Local Initiatives and Senior Policy Advisor to execute the overarching strategy to guide the Council’s organizing and advocacy at the state and local levels.
- Engage and manage relationships with government, business, and civic sector stakeholders, including through sharing Council data, public and private presentations, stakeholder meetings and convenings, and the design and execution of projects and initiatives.
- In consultation with the Director, manage the Council’s state legislative and policy portfolio, focusing on tracking and analyzing immigrant-related legislation at the state level, and connecting on-the-ground partners and stakeholders with the Council’s Research and Communications team.
- Directly manage and advise the State and Local Policy Manager and Policy Associate on state and local-level policy and research opportunities.
- Work with the Policy, Legal, and Immigrant Justice Campaign teams to connect State and Local projects and partners to the Council’s federal and grassroots advocacy campaigns.
- In collaboration with the Director and Senior Policy Advisor, develop new tools and resources for state and local partners that help advance and scale immigrant integration initiatives across the U.S.
- Work with the Director and the Development team to track metrics and state and local successes, develop and maintain funder relationships, and provide content for grant proposals and reports.
- Master’s Degree and a minimum of three years of relevant policy or private sector work experience.
- Experience managing a work plan with multiple projects and deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in the immigration policy field, preferably at the state and local levels
- Willingness to assess existing processes and operations, propose streamlined solutions, lead on the implementation of those solutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Familiarity with economic and demographic data focused on immigrant populations is a plus.
- Experience in people management is a plus.

$80,000 – $85,000
