Immigrants in Court Proceedings Will Have Even Less Access to Legal Counsel, After New Announcement

WASHINGTON, March 23, 2025—On Friday, the Trump Administration issued a memo that places new, unnecessary, and unwarranted scrutiny by ordering sanctions, reviews, and stricter oversight of attorneys in immigration and federal court.

With the rise in rapid deportations with no due process and the use of other federal agencies to track down noncitizens, attorneys are needed more than ever.

Federal Appeals Court Upholds Block on SF 2340, Iowa’s Anti-Immigrant Law

ST LOUIS, MISSOURI, JAN. 25, 2025 — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit today upheld a temporary block on SF 2340, Iowa's worst-ever immigration law.

The Iowa law was passed during the 2024 Iowa legislative session and was temporarily blocked by the courts just weeks after. It conflicts with federal law and would have a number of dramatic consequences for Iowans. It creates new crimes for anyone in Iowa, including a child, who has reentered the country after being deported — even if that person is now authorized to be in the U.S.

More than 100 Business Leaders Sign onto Council Letter Urging the Biden Administration to Address the Work Permit Backlog

WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 25, 2024 — Today, the American Immigration Council joins over 100 business organizations, including chambers of commerce and trade associations throughout the country, to call on the Biden administration to address the work permit backlogs. The letter urges the Biden administration to prioritize the processing of initial and renewal work permit applications.
