The Austin Human Rights Commission presented its “Austin Strategic Welcoming Plan” during Monday night’s Austin City Council meeting.
Initiated in July 2016, the wel coming plan focuses on making Austin an inclusive community for all residents. Twenty people from local government, schools, businesses, and nonprofits created the plan over the course of several months with funding from the “Gateways for Growth” Grant, courtesy of the New American Economy and Welcoming America organizations.
After conducting research and speaking with more than 100 members of the community, the plan features two areas of focus for the city of Austin to improve upon over the next five years: empowering multicultural leadership and increasing connections between communities.
Austin Human Rights Commission Chair Jason Baskin said success in these focus areas would mean city leadership and its workforce reflecting the populations they serve, and ensuring that the majority of residents feel as if they’re a meaningful part of the community as a whole.
