Kansas is one of several states in the country that has emerged in recent years as an increasingly popular destination for newly arrived immigrants. In 1990, just 2.5 percent of the state’s population had been born in another country. By 2010, that share had more than doubled, reaching 6.6 percent. Such patterns have only continued in more recent years. Between 2010 and 2014, Kansas’ immigrant population grew by 9.1 percent—or at a greater rate than the number of foreign-born residents increased in the country as a whole. Today , Kansas is home to more than 204,000 immigrants. Such immigrants serve as everything from software developers to physicians, making them critical contributors to Kansas’ economic success overall.
