North Carolina is one of several states in the country that has emerged in recent years as a popular destination for immigrants. While just 1.7 percent of the state’s population was foreign-born in 1990, that figure had more than quadrupled by 2010, reaching 7.5 percent. Such patterns have only continued into more recent years.
