Council Number Used for Telephone Spoofing Scam

The American Immigration Council warns non-citizens to guard against spoofing phone calls from ill-intended individuals seeking to create panic among our immigrant community. Some perpetrators of a scam pose as employees of the American Immigration Council to scare non-citizens about their immigration status and trick them into sharing personal information. It’s important for you to know the following:

The Council will not:

  • Call you to notify you about problem with your immigration status.
  • Demand that you share your alien identification number (“A-number”) or other personal identification information.
  • Threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you.
  • Require that you submit a payment.
  • Ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

If you receive one of these calls:

  • Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.
  • Call your immigration attorney, if you have one.
  • Report the call to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add "Immigration Telephone Scam" in the notes.

If you have or think you may have issues with your immigration status:

  • Contact an immigration attorney or a legal services provider to discuss your case.
