Council Urges Governors to Release People Detained in ICE Custody During Coronavirus Pandemic

In order to preserve public health during the coronavirus outbreak, groups urged the governors of Colorado, New Mexico, and New Jersey to take immediate steps that would reduce the number of individuals in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

The letters describe well-documented issues within ICE facilities that make inaction incredibly harmfuland possibly deadly.

The health of people in immigration detention is ICE's responsibility. The government must make immediate changes to ensure the health and safety of immigrants and staff in detention facilities throughout the country.
